Revisiting Forgotten Western Gate of Itafort

The Western Gate, one of the three gates of the medieval fort complex of Itafort, is today endangered by the expansion of National Highway 415. Located at the heart of Itanagar and within Archaeological Museum and Park Complex, C-sector, the Western Gate, lies in dilapidated condition and continues to have an oblivious presence.

This heritage walk aims to create awareness about the archaeological landscape of Itafort, its history, enigmatic ruins of the Southern Gate, architecture, local folklore associated with it, and discuss the controversy surrounding its construction and builder. The remains of the Itafort are housed in a nearby archaeological museum, which also sells books published by the Directorate of Research, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

Mr. Duli Ete is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. He is a graduate from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, University of Delhi, and received his M.A. and MPhil. degrees from the Department of History, University of Delhi, specialising in ancient Indian history. He hails from Aalo, West Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh.
