Noor is a women’s self-help group from Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, New Delhi. They create beautiful, handcrafted paper products that draw inspiration from the rich architectural heritage of Nizamuddin area. Established in 2009 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture as a part of the Humayun’s Tomb–Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative, the designs promote linkages with heritage monuments in the area while also creating economic opportunities for local women.  Noor has been conducting training workshops for school children and visitors since 2012.

The workshop will start after a visit to the famous monuments of the area:

  • Chausath Khamba: This mausoleum was an inspiration for Shahjahan’s Diwan-i-Aam, Hall of audience, Red Fort. Chausath Khamba has a magnificent architectural structure totally built out of white marbles.
  • Mazar-e-Ghalib: Tomb of Mirza Ghalib, a 19th century’s prominent poet hailing from the royal court of Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was famous for his offbeat poetry and his astute nature.

They are active members of Sair-e-Nizamuddin, the Self Help Group (SHG) of the community heritage volunteers, an initiative supported by Aga Khan Trust. Over the years the heritage awareness programme has been established with many government and private schools in Delhi and NCR. They conduct the tours both in Hindi and English, giving an authentic touch to the history of the area by adding fascinating legends and stories to it.
