Both scientists and artists have for long been captivated by animals and birds, whether one looks at Leonardo da Vinci’s animal sketches or at the birds of naturalist Audubon. Closer home, we have the Ramayana, the Jataka Tales, Mughal paintings and the Kalighat Patas depicting animals symbolising various ideas, feelings and emotions.

Very often, scientific and artistic endeavours start with an observation of nature. The scientist depicts the detail of the objects while the artist abstracts and symbolises the forms of animals and birds in paintings and sculptures. The Indian Museum, the largest and the oldest museum in India, has a rich collection of exhibits depicting animals and birds and their natural habitats, from the perspective of both science and art, in its Bird, Mammal and Painting Galleries. The workshop involves scientific observation and journaling of animals and birds at the selected galleries and exhibits of the Indian Museum and its artistic representation in the Kalighat Pata tradition by the participants, facilitated by the well-known artist Mr. Kalam Patua. Each participant will select an animal/bird from the exhibits using a journal provided to her/him using prompts and cues for scientific observation, information about the animal/bird and its habitat and guidelines for sketching. The participants will then try out the traditional way of depicting the selected animal/birds in the Kalighat style steered by Mr. Kalam Patua, who will also talk about the way in which animals have been represented in the Kalighat style. We hope that this exploration will inspire the participants to take a deeper interest in the world of nature both as scientists and artists.
