Both as it was imagined and as it actually existed, the Hindustan that Akbar ruled and passed on to Jahangir was, in the eyes of contemporary travellers, magnificent and exotic – and for modern Indians, looking into that past can be a mildly hallucinatory experience, both familiar and incredibly strange. Through an illustrated talk, Parvati Sharma tries to share some of the excitement and surprise she felt when she began discovering this world, and some of the ways in which what she learnt about this slice of our past allows for interesting perspectives on our present.
